Posco completes battery recycling plant in Poland
South Korean conglomerate Posco says it has finished building a used, secondary battery recycling plant in Brzeg Dolny, 30 km northwest of Poland’s capital Warsaw.
The Poland Legnica Sourcing Center has capacity to process 7,000 t/y of scrap material and used batteries and will eventually produce black mass containing nickel, lithium, cobalt and manganese.
The black mass will be shipped to Posco HY Clean Metal, a joint venture (JV) with Huayou Cobalt of China, which is constructing a plant in South Korea capable of extracting nickel, lithium and cobalt from 12,000 t/y of black mass, Yonhap news agency reported.
Best known as a steel maker, Posco is expanding into supplying materials for electric vehicle (EV) batteries as part of a diversification strategy.
