SDI completes acquisition of Mexican recycler

Indiana-based Steel Dynamics Inc (SDI) has concluded its purchase of Roca Acero in Mexico, boosting its recycling operations in the country.

Headquartered in Monterrey, Roca ships around 575,000 s.tons/y of recycled ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals from five plants in central and northern Mexico. Their processing capacity is approximately 850,000 s.tons/y.

As SDI’s OmniSource recycling business is present in Mexico, the acquisition takes the company’s ferrous and non-ferrous scrap processing capability in the country to above 2.5 M s.tons/y and, according to company chief Mark Millet, significantly strengthens its raw material procurement strategy.

“We believe our Mexican metals recycling facilities will provide a meaningful advantage to our electric arc furnace steel operations and planned aluminium flat rolled products operations,” he added.

In July the company announced plans to enter the aluminium flat rolled products market with a $2.2 bn investment in rolling and recycling operations in southeastern US.

SDI is best known as a steel maker through the EAF route. Its end products include sheet, beams, shapes, rail, SBQ (special bar quality), merchant bars and speciality sections as well as steel joists and deck.
