EGA begins building recycling plant

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has started construction of a 170,000 t/y aluminium recycling plant next to its Al Taweelah smelter in the UAE.

The unit will process post-consumer scrap, such as used window frames, as well as pre-consumer material from extrusion production into low-carbon aluminium billets.

“Aluminium recycling is key to our metal achieving its enormous potential to contribute to decarbonisation while improving global living standards,” said CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban. “This makes recycling the biggest global growth opportunity for our industry.”

The new plant, which EGA says will be the largest of its kind in the United Arab Emirates, will supply local and global markets. Most of the aluminium scrap generated in the UAE is currently exported for processing outside the country.
