Rusal increases recycled content in foundry alloys

Russia’s Rusal says it has now taken use of aluminium scrap in cast alloys made for the automotive industry up to 30%.

“By introducing end-of-life scrap into production of foundry alloys, Rusal creates new opportunities for companies to strengthen their potential in a low-carbon circular economy,” said Rusal’s sales and marketing director Roman Andryushin.

Starting with an initial 20%, the proportion recycled aluminium added to molten metal has been increased to between 25% and 30% during the course of this year.

The company said a selective approach to scrap sourcing provides comparable performance with primary foundry alloys. UC Rusal’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2050.
