ArcelorMittal to acquire Polish recycler

Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal has agreed to purchase Zlomex, a scrap metal recycling company with two yards in Poland.

Last year they shipped almost 400,000 t of ferrous scrap metal to a range of steel mills and foundries, including ArcelorMittal’s steel plants in Dąbrowa Gornicza and Warsaw.

Zlomex, Zaklad Przerobu Zlomu in full, added a new shredder and separation equipment at its Krakow scrap yard in 2022 and is investing in enlarging its Warsaw yard. ArcelorMittal said it is committed to supporting Zlomex’s ongoing growth strategy.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to close during H1, and would mark the steel giant’s fourth scrap metal acquisition in Europe in recent months. That is a “very positive development” in the company’s drive to enhance its ability to deliver low-carbon emissions steel, said ArcelorMittal Europe’s CEO Geert Van Poelvoorde.
